Sleep Tips & Aides: How To Get Better Sleep
0Sleep Tips and Aides:*
Getting poor to no sleep is a real bummer. Believe me, I know from personal experience.
I developed sleep issues after having surgery for breaking my knee after a ski accident, from which I developed #CFS.
Over time, I was able to greatly improve my energy levels, but my sleep was still an issue.
I never knew if I would get a good night’s sleep or not.
Hi! I’m Edie. I developed chronic fatigue after hurting my knee in a ski accident and having surgery for it in my early twenties. I tried everything to get better and to get my energy back.
What works? It’s a combination of things: diet, self-care, mind-body practices like #yoga, reducing your toxic load, stress management, using high-quality #supplements (or p.drugs that work), community, high-quality #sleep, etc. Click here for more information on why sleep matters for #health and well-being.
My number one tip for better sleep is coming up below…
p.s. Did you know I wrote a whole book on the subject of how I got well?
It’s called The Memory of Health. You can read more here about what worked for me, and what may work for you. Click here to find it: https://portlandwellnesscoach.com/wellnesscoaching/
Sleep Tips & Aides: How To Get Better Sleep
These days, I do many things to ensure a good night’s sleep:
- I manage my stress during the day – I keep my cortisol levels in check
- I do my best to eat well, and in a way that keeps my cortisol levels in check
- I am lucky to be able to engage in mind-body #fitness and other exercise that helps me sleep deeper
- I am also lucky to normally get relatively early morning sun exposure
- I limit the amount of stimulants I have, and time them for earlier in the day, or when cortisol is low
- I try to go to bed and get up at similar hours – I am not always successful, but I have a routine
- I use sleep supplements that help my body sleep deeper, to get more restful and healing sleep

Here are some of my favorite sleep supplements:
Herbatonin. I cannot take regular melatonin. It is synthetic, and it congests my liver, drops my energy levels, and causes CFS symptoms in me. Herbatonin is the perfect substitute for me. It is melatonin made from/based on plants, like chlorella. Melatonin helps your body sleep deeper, and is a powerful hormone in the body too. It also counteracts cortisol.
I do fine taking it most nights, but this may not be the case for your body. You don’t want to become dependent on it. I alternate it with other sleep aides like CBD to help my body sleep deeper and counter the effects of stress during the day.
5HTP by Source Naturals is another one of my favorite sleep supplements. It helps your body produce more melatonin, so you can sleep deeper. I love the 100 mg from Source Naturals. It’s a great amount (not for every night, maybe every other night, or several times a week). It’s also a smaller size capsule.
5HTP is a precursor to serotonin, which is then converted into melatonin in your body. It is supposed to help with moods too, but I find it makes me sleepy during the day. Also, since it creates serotonin, don’t take too much, as you can develop serotonin sickness – not a fun feeling.
My Number #1 Tip for better sleep:
Try CBD for deeper sleep. I love CBD. CBD actually helps your body produce more serotonin, which in turn converts to melatonin, which helps you sleep deeper and better (with more vivid dreaming as a bonus!).

Some of the concentrated brands can be too much for my system, beyond a little here and there, but I love full-spectrum hemp cannabinoids. Hemp Fusion offers full-spectrum CBD products my body loves. They help me sleep deeper and better, and also help me with anxiety, inflammation, and energy. However, I do love one brand, Liberty Lixir, which is a concentrated CBD oil. You can find it here:

Herbal Supplements: Two of my favorite that work really well are Napz and Utzy’s Fall Asleep.
They just seem (for me) to be great formulas, that have just the right combination of herbs and minerals, in some cases, that reliably help me fall asleep, or fall asleep if I happen to get up at some point in the night.
